Lake Manyara National Park is a scenic destination on Tanzania's Northern Safari Circuit, nestled between the Great Rift Valley's steep escarpment and the shallow, alkaline Lake Manyara. Though smaller than other parks like the Serengeti, it offers a diverse and compact safari experience.
Key features
- Unique tree-climbing lions: One of the park's most famous features is its population of lions, which have an unusual habit of climbing and relaxing in the acacia trees.
- Flamingo flocks: The alkaline lake is known for attracting vast flocks of pink flamingos, especially during the wet season (November–May). They feed on the algae, creating a breathtaking pink blanket across the water.
- Diverse habitats: Within its small area, the park contains a rich variety of landscapes, including groundwater forests, grassy floodplains, and acacia woodlands.
- Large elephant herds: The park is home to a sizable elephant population, which can be seen foraging in the lush groundwater forests.
- Abundant birdlife: With over 400 species, the park is a birdwatcher's paradise. Aside from the flamingos, visitors can spot pelicans, storks, and many other water birds.
- Hot springs: The park's diverse features also include natural hot springs, where underground water reaches temperatures of up to 60°C.
When to visit
- Dry Season (June–October): The ideal time for general wildlife viewing. The drier conditions make animals easier to spot as they congregate around water sources. However, flamingo populations may be lower during this season.
- Wet Season (November–May): This is the best time for birdwatching, as migratory birds arrive in large numbers. The scenery is lush and green, and the flamingo population is at its peak.

- Game drives: The primary activity for spotting the park's diverse wildlife, including elephants, buffalos, giraffes, and the famous tree-climbing lions.
- Night game drives: A special experience for spotting nocturnal animals like genets, civet cats, and active lions and hippos.
- Canoeing: During the wet season, when water levels are high enough, guided canoeing trips offer a unique perspective on the lake and its birdlife.
- Treetop walkway: A 370-meter-long walkway provides a canopy-level perspective of the groundwater forest.
- Cultural tours: The nearby town of Mto wa Mbu offers guided walks to experience the local culture and visit farming areas.
Location and access
Located on the Northern Safari Circuit, Lake Manyara is easily reached by road, approximately a 90-minute drive from Arusha. It is often visited as a day trip or overnight stay on the way to or from the Ngorongoro Crater or the Serengeti.
